Empowering Change: Education for All with Influencer Impact

The Challenge
The Open University was founded to make higher education accessible to all, regardless of background or circumstance. Yet Black and Asian communities, who make up 12.2% of the UK population, represented only 6.75% of OU students. At a time when many brands were scaling back their commitment to diversity, the OU chose to lean in and address this underrepresentation directly.
The Strategy
The campaign partnered with 12 culturally rooted creators, including Big Manny and SmashBengali, who had broken traditional expectations in their own communities to forge unconventional career paths. Their stories, shaped by education but on their own terms, offered audiences something powerful: the ability to see themselves in a future they had not previously considered. The strategy was grounded in authentic representation rather than aspiration messaging.
The Work
The campaign rolled out across four distinct phases: an edutainment-style gameshow, a conversation-led roundtable, a peer-driven storytelling series, and a day-in-the-life creator shadowing format. Each phase was designed to reach the target audience at different moments and through different types of content, with real OU students featured throughout to reinforce authenticity.
Results
The campaign delivered a 16% uplift in positive brand scores and a 6% rise in registrations from Black and Asian communities, demonstrating that authentic, creator-led representation can drive both brand and business outcomes.
The Judges' Verdict
“A phenomenal initiative and an impressive delivery, combining clear KPIs with meaningful social purpose — Word on the Curb's inclusion was key for authentic, insight-driven planning.”
