Buttermilk x Gap: The Community Wears Gap

The Challenge
Gap was facing declining relevance in a crowded fashion market. The brand needed more than a campaign refresh; it needed to reconnect with contemporary culture in a way that felt genuine rather than manufactured, and to do so at meaningful scale.
The Strategy
Rather than pushing a brand message outward, Gap handed creative control to its community. The strategy centred on empowering over 2,000 creators to reinterpret, remix, and reimagine the brand through their own lenses. Cultural catalysts including Troye Sivan and Tyla anchored the campaign, but the real energy came from the creators who shaped how Gap showed up across diverse communities.
The Work
The campaign blended evergreen, campaign-led, and reactive content, giving creators genuine freedom to express Gap through their own cultural identity. A viral green-screen styling mechanic drove mass participation, and the campaign extended into commerce through a sold-out co-created product. The result blurred the lines between content, community, and commerce in a way that felt organic at every touchpoint.
Results
The campaign achieved a 227% overachievement on impression targets, a 10.92% engagement rate, and a 51% surge in branded search. Most importantly, Gap reignited its cultural relevance not through paid noise but through authentic, creator-led storytelling that resonated across generations.
The Judges' Verdict
“By trusting over 2,000 creators with genuine creative freedom and supporting them with high-profile cultural anchors, Gap achieved something rare: a heritage brand that felt genuinely co-authored by its community.”
